I was wary of left field
Watching the periphery
Planning for the random and ironic
My senses weren’t quite attuned to the supersonic
It made a beeline
Belying my expectations
Not so benign
It sank my battleship
Words from the Dalai Lama
Arrange what I already know into just the right way
Sometimes you just need to know where to insert the comma
The Kama Sutra we write ourselves
Now I write my own book
Mere mortals— all of us— no one has the answer
Victim no more
I wrestle destiny into submission with my kung fu grip
And look it in the eyes and smile with ferocity
And peace
Epilogue
My submarine lurks in the depth— hidden away— while it wastes pegs looking— I hear the depth charges in the distance— but am not shaken
I am a steely eyed killer of the deep and am one with the denizens of this domain
