Heaven Is, To Betsy

· poetry

Heaven is, to Betsy

Every day, here and now

Not some distant imaginary place

Not some promised goodness later

But goodness abounding all around

She saw it with her own eyes

In 20/20 vision

Not through rose colored glasses

But the natural spectrum of it

We can all see it, but decide to shade it with the ugliness that is

here

But, if we could just learn from her

We could see it to

And if we just chose to embrace it

The darkness would diminish

We would find the enlightenment

Not filtered through a god

Or falsely enhanced by a belief

Or a biased community

Out of fear

Out of weakness

But solid and strong

With love for ourselves and others

Just deny it

Choose to be good, and see the good

Lose the hate

Stop identifying who is different

Stop being hypocrites

Stop being bigots

Stop putting the wrong people on pedestals

Be understanding, now

Put yourself in other’s shoes

Kindness will get you there

Not a book

Not a faith

Kindness now

Do it now

Honor people now

Tell them now

Don’t tell them what to believe

Or how to live

It is evident and natural

You know when someone is kind

You know when you are loved

These things are naturally evident and honest

Have the courage to live life now

With strength and dignity and humility

Be a good person

Ask, what would Betsy do?

I will now
